Defer Your Student Loan While In School
Are you attending classes, but your student loans are still in repayment?
If you are enrolled with a class load of at least half-time status (as defined by your school), you can temporarily postpone making your student loan payments by requesting an In-School Deferment. There is no time limit for an In-School Deferment as long as you meet the enrollment requirement.
Avoid struggling to make your loan payment, falling past due or even defaulting on your student loans! Here are some helpful deferment reminders:
- Deferments are an entitlement if you meet the eligibility requirements. If your In-School Deferment ends, but you are still in school at least half-time, you may submit a new deferment request.
- A deferment allows you to temporarily postpone making your student loan payments during the authorized deferred period. After the deferment period is over, your monthly payments will resume.
- The federal government pays the interest on your subsidized Stafford Loans during the deferment period. For unsubsidized Stafford, Grad PLUS and PLUS loans, you are responsible for the interest during the deferment. You can either let the interest accrue and be capitalized at the end of the deferment period, or you can make interest payments while the loan is deferred. Making interest payments will help lower the overall costs of your loan.
What are your next steps?
- Download an In-School Deferment Form and complete Sections 1, 2 and 3 as instructed.
- Take the In-School Deferment Form to your Registrar's Office to have your enrollment information confirmed. Your school with either complete Section 4 of the In-School Deferment or they may use an Enrollment Verification Form.
Note: Your deferment will not be processed until these steps are completed. You must continue making your student loan payments until the deferment has been processed by National Education. Should you need forbearance during this time, contact National Education Servicing.
