Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is your first step in the financial aid process. The FAFSA data is used by most colleges to award major sources of federal, state, and institutional financial aid including the Federal Pell Grant, student loans, and college work-study. The 2010-2011 FAFSA is now available at www.fafsa.ed.gov in both English and Spanish.
When you use FAFSA on the Web to complete your application online, the information will be processed and sent only to the school(s) you authorize. Be sure to select the correct academic year you are seeking assistance.
Use your PIN to access a pre-filled FAFSA on FAFSA on the Web. Simply update the existing information and then add any new information required. Plan to use the same PIN(s) provided by the U.S. Department of Education.
If this is your first time filing the FAFSA, there are a number of tools to assist you. To help prepare, be sure to:
Do you know what your school's preferred deadline date is for filing the FAFSA? If not, check the school's website or contact the financial aid office for the filing date and also learn of any additional financial aid forms required by your school. It's a date you don't want to miss. You should request or print your confirmation page to verify the time and date you filed the FAFSA, and keep it with your other financial aid documents.
After processing your information, a Student Aid Report will be sent to the email address you included on the FAFSA or mailed if no address was provided. Review this report carefully for any errors noted by the processor or any data that requires a correction. Directions are provided on how to update your information.
Questions about completing the FAFSA are best addressed by the financial aid office at your school or by using the various help tools at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
