Grad PLUS Application Process
Students are strongly encouraged to pursue all other forms of financial aid before borrowing a Grad PLUS Loan. You should first complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The postsecondary school you will be attending prepares a notification which details the financial aid package (grants, work-study, scholarships, loans, etc.) awarded to the student. Grad PLUS Loans can be used to cover unmet financial need or help with meeting the expected family contribution.
If this is your first Grad PLUS Loan, a Master Promissory Note (MPN) must be completed. Check with your school to determine if you need to complete a MPN.
The student is the applicant for a Grad PLUS Loan.
- The student's credit must be approved in order to receive the loan.
- Eligibility is not based on financial need.
- The amount borrowed may not exceed total educational expenses less total financial aid received from all other sources.
- The student must review the Rights and Responsibilities in obtaining a Grad PLUS Loan.
- The school determines and certifies the loan amount.
The Electronic Process
Most postsecondary schools participate in an electronic Grad PLUS Loan process enabling you to complete the application online.
