While consolidation of in-school loans is not allowed in the FFEL Program, there is a way to consolidate if the situation is right for you.

You can request that your lender(s) convert your in-school loans to a repayment status. By doing this, you waive the grace period that may have been available on those loans, and the interest subsidy that may have been paid during the grace period. You will then need to request that the loans be consolidated. Be aware, however, that while National Education will allow it, some lenders may not honor your request for early repayment. If this occurs, you will not be able to consolidate your in-school loans with that lender.

To take advantage of the current, low rates (see comparison chart below), you must request early repayment and apply for the consolidation loan by JUNE 30, 2006. Once the loans have been consolidated, you can request that your lender place the consolidation loan in an in-school deferment.

Act now to lock in your current low interest rates.
Current legislation will make students still enrolled in school ineligible
for loan consolidation after June 30, 2006.

Lock In Your Current Low Rates

IN-SCHOOL/GRACE PERIOD STAFFORD LOAN RATE 4.750%
REPAYMENT STAFFORD LOAN RATE 5.375%

This option is not for everyone. It can be most beneficial to students who are nearing the end of their in-school period, and who already have high balance loans outstanding. You can lock in a low, fixed rate on the existing loans. Keep in mind, though, that any future loans will likely carry a higher rate, as all new Stafford Loans disbursed after July 1, 2006 will be at a fixed rate of 6.8%. PLUS Loans will carry a fixed rate of 8.5%.

If you would like to request early repayment and consolidate your loans now, there are two forms you will need to complete.

  1. Early Repayment Request – this is the letter in which you request that your in-school loans be converted to repayment status
  2. Loan Consolidation Application and Promissory Note

NOTE – IN ORDER TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF CURRENT RATES, BOTH OF THESE FORMS MUST BE COMPLETED AND POSTMARKED BY JUNE 30, 2006.
